My Anticipatory Guide on the book called "Clowning around". By Aadirai

 Group 1

Title: Clowning Around

Anticipatory Guide

Learning Intentions

Name: Aadirai Kaliyaperumal

Statement

True

False

Clown Doctors can calm all children in spite of their language ability

Evidence:

Yes because in the text it said that a clown doctor was helping a boy, and eventually , with the clown’s help he calmed down, and the staff were able to get on with their work. ✓

*

You have to have a background in medicine to be a clown doctor

Evidence:

No because it said that Most of the clowns have

a background in theatre, circus, or puppetry – and sometimes they have all three of them. ✓

*

Having a positive outlook on life helps you recover quickly in hospital

Evidence:

Yes because the text says that there is a really strong link between how you feel and how quickly your body heals.

If a person’s feeling more confident, more cheerful, more optimistic...then they’ll probably get out of hospital sooner.

They’re also likely to get better quicker, no matter what the problem is.

*

Laughter is the best medicine

Evidence:

Yes because it says that, “Laughter is a powerful tool,” she says. “Sometimes it really is the best medicine.”The doctors and nurses at Starship agree. ✓

*

Jolene has been to hospital once

Evidence:

Yes because Jolene was born with a condition that

causes problems with her blood vessels.

This means she’s a frequent visitor to the hospital. ✓

*

Jude uses the same tricks on all patients

Evidence:

No because she said that Sometimes, clown doctors leave their props in their bags. Not every patient is in the mood for a laugh. “You have to deal with each person as you find them,” says Jude, “and always remember that people have different needs. This is an important part of our training.” ✓

*

Jude always asks patients how they are as a conversation starter

Evidence:

No she does not because Jude says that a clown doctor will

never ask a patient point-blank how

he or she is feeling. Instead, they are

taught to read a child’s face. ✓

*

Hormones stay the same throughout our bodies

Evidence:

No because Laughter changes

our hormone balance. It reduces the stress hormones,

replacing them with the hormones that make us feel good.” These feel-good

hormones send a positive message to a person’s immune system.✓

*

Jude uses her imagination with her bag of tricks

Evidence:

Yes because it says The peg earrings are a laugh. The dress looks very cheerful. The red nose ... it’s essential!

All these props help Jude to become Doctor

U Who. ✓

Samoan language week-The Umu.

Samoan Language Week - The Umu By Aadirai “I can’t wait to suck my teeth into the juicy, hot looking meat in the umu”, I thought in my head as I saw the delicious looking food burning and being cooked in the umu. Although I was also sad because it was Miss Haslem’s last day. Last Friday it was the last day of Samoan language week, and since it was the last day we decided to do an umu for the school. I was so excited when I heard that we were having an umu. But in the morning we first had to go to Room 6’s assembly. After the assembly, we were allowed to see how the umu was going. As we went to the umu, I could smell the scrumptious food cooking in the umu. “Mmmm, that smell’s good!” I said. The whole school was gathering around the umu. Ayla’s Mum Jasma, her Dad Lawrence and her brother were helping with the umu. I was getting so hungry by looking at the food, but they said that I had to wait until lunchtime. Before it was lunchtime we went to the top court to sing the national anthem of Samoa. The song was beautiful, a while later, Father Ben came. While we were singing, Mr.T was raising the flag slowly. Soon the lunch bell rang. Every class was lining up to go to the hall to try out the umu. The disappointing thing was that Room 2 was last to get the food. Staring at people eating the food made me hungry. We lined up in the hall and we waited for our food. Finally it was my turn, I took some seafood, chop suey, pork buns and pork. My favourite was the seafood and the pork bun, but everything was delicious. It was nice to end Samoan language week with an umu, but best of all we had a great time.

Mary MacKillop Story . By Rocio and Aadirai

 Mary MacKillop Story

By Rocio and Aadirai

Mary MacKillop was born on the 15th of January in 1842.

Her parents were from Scotland, her mother, Flora and her father, Alexander MacKillop. They had 8 children and Mary was the oldest sibling out of all of them. Mary was well educated by her father, but Mary and her family were really poor and didn’t have a home, and they were separated a lot since they were poor.

When Mary was 18 she moved to Penola in South Australia, Where she became a governess to her uncle and aunty’s children, The Camerons. Mary had a dream to educate 4 children. In 1867 she became the first sister of Saint Joseph and wore a black dress. A school opened in Penola in an old stable and she decided to teach children there. Soon young women were inspired by Mary and became sisters with her. They opened schools for the poor and the children in the outback settlement. Mary also opened an orphanage, while the sisters were visiting people in jail.

Her dream was for everyone to be kind. She usually said “Never see a need without doing something about it.” She said this to the sisters and the children. Throughout her life she was misunderstood. Bishop Sheil mistakenly thought Mary was disobedient. Bishop Sheil expelled Mary from the church and also expelled 47 sisters. This hurt Mary very much. Later on, Bishop Sheil realised the mistake he made for expelling Mary, so he welcomed her back to the church. Bishop Roynold told Mary to move to Italy.

Mary suffered from rheumatism, so her right side got paralyzed, she couldn’t walk, she couldn’t stand, but she could talk. A few days later she had to rely on a wheelchair. But the sisters kept on working hard.

Mary died at Mount Street at North Sydney on the 8th of August 1909. After her death, the sisters did a wonderful thing that Mary started.

Room 2's favorite colours. By Aadirai

Room 2’s Favourite colours

Red is the most popular colour in Room 2. Twelve people (34.3%) chose red as their favourite colour. I think most people like red because maybe some of their favourite things are coloured red like an apple or a red T-shirt that they have.

The second favourite colour is blue because eight people (22.9%) like the colour blue because maybe they like dark colours or maybe they like some sort of fruit that’s blue like blueberries. The third favourite colour is Green because only six people (17.1%) like green because maybe they like bright colours. Five people (14.3%) chose yellow as their favourite colour. The least favourite (11.4%) colour is purple. I think that less people chose purple because maybe only a little amount of people like purple things like purple clothes or purple objects.

My journey-How did I come here. By Aadirai.

Aadirai’s Journey to New Zealand

I was born in the United Kingdom. Me and my family came to New Zealand in 2014. We came to New Zealand because my Dad was offered a job at Auckland City Hospital to work as a doctor here. We didn’t have family here, but we had friends in New Zealand. We chose New Zealand instead of staying in the United Kingdom because we wanted to try a new place to stay in. Another reason is that Australia and New Zealand gave an offer for a job, so my Dad compared both countries to see which one was better for the job, to stay in and which countries were better to raise children in. It seemed like New Zealand was the best place to live in than Australia. We traveled to New Zealand by plane. Our stops on the way to New Zealand were Singapore and Australia. It took us 24 hours to get to New Zealand from the United Kingdom. I was only three and a half when I got to New Zealand. My brother was only eleven years old. We ended up staying in Auckland because that’s where my Dad’s job was. A friend of my Dad’s came and picked us up from Auckland airport. He showed us places in Auckland for a while. After he showed us around he dropped us to a motel to stay, until we got our own house. The difference between New Zealand and the United Kingdom is that the United Kingdom is bigger and the weather there is freezing cold, but in New Zealand the weather is much more pleasant. Another difference is that there are more beaches here in Auckland than in the United Kingdom. There is more greenery here in New Zealand too. We weren’t home sick because we were excited to come here. New Zealand was a place that we had never been to before. My parents missed their friends from the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom  was the country where I went to my first school. We haven’t been to the United Kingdom again. We are hoping to go there again one day because it is my birth place.
